Fire and smoke damage
After a fire, the damage usually goes beyond what burned. Smoke, soot, and the water used to put out the fire can affect the whole house.
Local help line coming soon. Until it opens: shut off the water at the main valve, turn off power to wet rooms if it is safe, take photos for insurance, and call your insurance company. Never wade into standing water near outlets.
What a restoration company usually does
- Boards up windows and covers roof openings to protect the house.
- Removes water left from firefighting and dries the structure.
- Cleans soot from walls, ceilings, and belongings.
- Works on smoke odor in the house and in the air ducts.
- Helps sort what can be cleaned and what needs replacing, and documents it for insurance.
Before you go back in
Wait until the fire department says it’s safe. Don’t turn on electrical systems or the HVAC until they’ve been checked. Take photos and call your insurer.
Please note: This website is a free referral service, not a contractor. We connect you with an independent restoration company that serves your area. That company gives the estimate, does the work, and is responsible for it. We may be paid by the company for the referral. You are never charged by us. Read the full disclosure.
