Mold after water damage

Mold needs moisture to grow. If something stayed wet after a leak, or a leak went unnoticed, mold can follow.

Local help line coming soon. Until it opens: shut off the water at the main valve, turn off power to wet rooms if it is safe, take photos for insurance, and call your insurance company. Never wade into standing water near outlets.

Signs of mold

  • A musty or earthy smell
  • Spots on walls, ceilings, or the back of cabinets
  • Peeling or bubbling paint near a past leak
  • Allergy-like symptoms that get worse at home

What cleanup usually involves

A company finds the moisture source, closes off the area so spores don’t spread, removes moldy materials that can’t be cleaned, cleans what’s left, and dries everything out. Fixing the water problem is what keeps it from coming back.

Good to know

Texas has its own rules for mold assessment and remediation work. Ask the company whether they hold the state license for the work they’re doing, and whether a separate assessor is needed.

Please note: This website is a free referral service, not a contractor. We connect you with an independent restoration company that serves your area. That company gives the estimate, does the work, and is responsible for it. We may be paid by the company for the referral. You are never charged by us. Read the full disclosure.
